Sand City 100 – Phil White Memorial Race

Sand City 100 racers

Razorback Offroad™ recently sponsored a local desert race, the 2022 Phil White Memorial Sand City 100. This was a special race this year held in honor of Phil White, a co-founder of the Desert Rats racing club.

The Desert Rats of Idaho club was started by Elegant Phil White and Larry “The Tuner” Meredith.  The two were unhappy with the club they were previously in and with $350 between the two, they decided to venture out on their own and put on races as the Desert Rats.  The first race was held in the Grand View area in 1978.  In 1983, the race was called Sand City 100 and was given the name due to the miles and miles of big sand washes in the Grand View area. The next legendary race was in 1984 called the Monkey Butt 100, that started at Hemingway Butte near Melba and ended in Grand View.  The race ended up being 110 miles long. By 1988 the duo (and their spouses/kids) no longer put any races on.  In 1999, Phil White and Shane Meredith revived the club and brought back the Sand City 100. The club hosted a National Hare and Hound back in 2002 in Grand View.  The club has continued to grow and has a bunch of great people in it today. They are a family-oriented club and love hosting the Sand City race every year and always look for new people to join their club.

This year, Razorback Offroad™ sponsored the event. We were there on Sunday, April 3, 2022 socializing with riders and their families. We passed out some free swag and our photographer took pictures of the event. This was a great opportunity to see other off-roaders with their UTV’s decked out in RBO products. Our team brought the RZR Trail S fully loaded with the new folding windshield, roof, rear sliding window, cargo rack, and Padded Heat Shield. Keep an eye open for these new products, they will be launching soon.

A family member of a racer had his Polaris RZR 900 at the race. We noticed he had the cargo rack and the folding windshield. As we were talking to him, he offered to pull his RZR in front of the RBO trailer so we could snap a picture.

A fun fact about Desert Rats, the current president, Adam Meredith is the third generation member in his family to help with the club. Shane Meredith, Adam’s father, was the son of Larry Meredith, who helped co-found the Desert Rats club with Phil White. Also, Scott White, Phil White’s son, also currently helps in the club. To say this is a family based club is an understatement.

Shane proudly displayed his Polaris General XP and all his RBO products on his machine. His XP is fully loaded with the cargo rack, folding windshield and Rotopax mounts.

The Phil White Memorial Sand City 100 Race was a wonderful opportunity to get to know off-roaders in our community. We were honored to be part of this and look forward to future races. Congratulations to all the racers.
